Things to do ... Platja d'Aro and nearness
The Doll Museum

Located in the old centre of Castell d'Aro - declared National Heritage Cultural Site by the Generalitat (Government) of Catalonia in 1995 - in the building once occupied by the Town Hall. The idea of creating the Doll Museum, opened in 1997, sprung from the donation of dolls by Josefina Teixidor. Teixidor began her collection of dolls thirty years ago, with the purpose of making the doll better known as an instrument of human culture. An instrument through which different countries and peoples expressed their way of life and customs.
The first floor of the Museum also houses the extremely interesting private collection of Neus Borrell. Borrell inherited her love for collecting dolls from her mother who left her a small collection of 5 dolls and a bedroom on her death. Over the years she built up the collection until it became one of the largest and most famous private doll collections. Also on display as part of the Josefina Teixidor Museum are other smaller donations (donated by private collectors, embassies, etc.) and the temporary exhibition by Neus Borrell dedicated to antique dolls.
The Museum has specialised in dolls from different countries, in consonance with the cosmopolitan environment of the town. In order to highlight the differences depending on origin and the materials used to make them, the dolls are arranged in the order of the country each doll comes from. It is possible to find dolls made from ceramic, straw, papier-mâché, wood, plastic, cloth, leather, ivory and even animal horns or coconut shell.
Another group is composed of dolls that are outstanding for their quality. The value of the museum lies in the precision of the work, hand-made, and the similarity of the period costumes. Of special interest is the quality of the natural silks or the lacework and embroidery later to be used by the ladies of upper French society. This is further highlighted by the role they play as evidence of the customs at that time.
There are also items created exclusively for collectors and which have been donated by the companies manufacturing the Barbie and D'Antón brand names. Of special interest is a Barbie, reproduction of Marilyn Monroe, which is no longer available on the market and very sought after by collectors. The Museum also shows us a good example of furniture or complements that accompanied the dolls to give greater reality to children's toys and games.
